WAS BLEIBT IST DIE ZUKUNFT

Interview: Tanja Dueckers, Berlin 2009

REMOTEWORDS: “What remains is the future” is a statement with many angles to it. Almost diametrically, it calls the past critically in question, but also points positively to the future. You speak of a future that cannot be imagined without critical examination. “Remain” in the sense of “standing pat” suggests new possibilities and hopes, but that which remains also reflects the finite.  What does the future mean to you?

Tanja Dückers: The statement “what remains is the future” expresses melancholy and hope in equal parts. The first half of the sentence “What remains” implies a loss, infers that much will not remain, that now our view of things sums up what there is that still remains and does not get lost.
When the future remains, past and present stand at our disposition. At present, the bell has been tolled for the end of coal mining in Germany. A long era is being terminated; people are losing their jobs, a whole region its identity. The past, too, is given another valuation. The past is not static in itself, for its interpretation accompanies the viewer who looks back while withdrawing further and further in the distance. If coal mining was once considered ultramodern, it is now seen through nostalgic eyes. In a postindustrial age, coal mining no longer stands only for a solid economic power, but also for very hard physical work, miner’s lungs and environmental damage.
But what remains is the future. Coal is still being extracted in many countries in the world, and it is nowhere near sure that atomic energy is really the better and friendlier form of energy production for humans and the environment. “What remains is the future” means: what remains is undetermined. And: everything is (still) possible. It’s not for nothing that many people renovating their homes want to hold onto their old coal burners. Indeed man has been digging coal much longer than he’s been producing electricity. And will maybe do so even a great deal longer. Who knows? What remains? We’ll see. Or those who come after us will.

REMOTEWORDS: Not only Dinslaken, but the entire region of the Ruhr, is subject to the structural transformation from an industrial to a cultural site by the shutdown of hard coal mining (in 2018 the last pit will closed). Successful projects such as the Zollverein mine in Essen show that transformation is possible. You, a Berliner, live yourself in a city full of “creative and culture-producing people” and have lived through the way East Berlin has changed from a workers’ city to a hip art metropolis. Today, however, you also speak of the self-exploitation of freelance artists as a result of the overabundant supply. Do you think the entire Ruhr, which is after all the biggest agglomeration in Germany with a population of approximately 5.5 million, can be reinvented?

Tanja Dückers: It is certainly very ambitious to want to restructure the Ruhr economically, whereby of those 5 million inhabitants only some work in coal mining; the issue is not complete restructuring. I don’t think we have to worry about a successful transformation of the old mines into their use as cultural-industrial sites. The Zollverein mine is not the only example of such a successful undertaking. Other industrial facilities—for example the old transformer stations in Berlin —are also highly attractive as a location for museums, galleries, studios, restaurants, bars and clubs. Several decades from now, perhaps at the end of our century, we will marvel at the mines just as much as we now marvel at a little Baroque palace. The urban-industrial countryside of the Ruhr is fascinating and will in time arouse ever more interest and seem ever more exotic. I have no doubt that there are sufficiently interesting and good ideas for its use.  For instance, one characteristic for the transition from an industrial to a postindustrial society is that there is an increasingly stronger emphasis on “soft values” like culture and education. These sectors will have their long-term infrastructure expanded, even if short-term trends may look otherwise.
But for the former wage earners, it will be more difficult. The trend to unemployment among industrial workers, of course, has not only hit the mining industry. However, we should not think that those working in creative industries (the ones who will perhaps rule over how the mines are reused) will be sitting pretty, say financially. The creative economy is growing enormously, but those employed in it earn on average—according to the commission of enquiry authorized by the Bundestag in December 2008—only 10,000 Euro annually, which is so little that many of them cannot even afford health insurance. Also many artists and creative people tend to exploit themselves, that is, their working conditions are such that we can only call it self-exploitation. There is no longer any separation between work and free time (the age of “work is work and schnapps is schnapps” is long gone); work is done at home and often till far into the night. Much work is unpaid (no one expects a baker, engineer or doctor to serve or treat a customer or patient gratis, but this is not seldom expected of professional artists who work full-time), and there is no planning security at all.  You live from project to project.
The transformation from an industrial trade to a cultural facility is on its own not enough. The minor matter of the “human being” must also be considered. Especially in a society in which ever fewer people are offered a ‘traditional’ job, in which people must rely on their own initiative, in short: there will be more and more freelancers. The winding-up of the coal industry stands exemplarily for the situation in the whole of society.

REMOTEWORDS: Hard coal or oil, all fossil fuels are stored solar energy. Many millions of years ago the forests were pressed into coal and oil. But these resources are finite.  In the future we will live from the sun via photovoltaic and solar power. But in around 4.5 billion years—an admittedly very distant future—the sun will implode. No later than then will the future for mankind look very grim. The future of every single person and of all of mankind: this result will extinguish all of history. A fascinating and horrifying thought. Will then no future remain?

Tanja Dückers: But yes, even then a future will remain. If we don’t think all too anthropocentrically. By then we will have perhaps planted our brain into bacteria, will live the happy life of this outstandingly successful species, which has also been detected on Mars and Saturn’s mood Titan—thus survival in any case. Maybe also in another solar system.
The future is a temporal concept, and there will always be endlessly sufficient time, maybe not for homo sapiens, but rather for the bacterium post-homo terrestris. What remains is: uncertainty. And: curiosity.

Was bedeutet Zukunft für dich?

Was bleibt.
