E-Culture Fair/ISEA

For the E-Culture Fair 2010 REMOTEWORDS is being expanded as a virtual game:
A large-scale, accessible satellite picture of the surrounds of the exhibition space (Dortmunder U) invites each visitor to cover one roof with a message. On the spot, the statements are directly applied to the satellite picture. By means of REMOTEWORDS’ blog
virtual visitors from around the world can contribute statements on issues such as urbanity, navigation, digitality, virtual simulation and city (urban space).

Hacking the city

REMOTEWORDS is an urban satellite at "Hacking the City". Hacking the City” is a project reacting to changing structures in the public, mobility and communication in the city. The project takes place at the Museum Folkwang and all over the City of Essen. Remotewords will set up a "lab" for three days at the Museum Folkwang in order to find a roof and a message for the City of Essen.

REMOTEWORDS - REDEFINDING AN URBAN LANDSCAPE

The exhibition project "REDEFINDING AN URBAN LANDSCAPE" extends the concept of REMOTEWORDS into a virtual game for the people of Johannesburg to participate in. A huge satellite image to walk into invites the visitor to mark a roof of his choice and take part in reshaping the urban landscape around ARTS on MAIN. The focus is the transition of Doornfontein and the rapid change of the urban landscape, forced by evictions and relocations in former times, nowadays by transformations as a result of the abolition of apartheid structures. The blog www.remotewords.net contributes to the discussion.

As a contribution to the world climate summit, REMOTEWORDS — parallel to switching on a 30.000 W photovoltaic system — will write “2761 OAKS” on the roof of a warehouse in Aachen. The message refers to Joseph Beuys’ action of “7000 Oaks” and cites the precise number of trees that correspond to the potential amount of carbon dioxide that the photovoltaic system will not emit.

REMOTEWORDS has marked the Universität der Künste Berlin (UdK) with a statement by Siegfried Zielinski. „KUNST MUSS NICHT“ (ART MUSTN’T MUST) takes a stand against the omnipotent force of necessity and instrumental rationality and the increasing utilization of the arts - which begins already at educational institutions.

District in Johannesburg named after REMOTEWORDS message #8

The district around Main and Berea Streets in the Johannesburg district “Doornfountain” was given a new name after a message by REMOTEWORDS and Niq Mhlongo. In February 2009, REMOTESWORDS—in collaboration with the South African writer Niq Mhlongo and Jozi art:lab (Johannesburg)—wrote on the roof of “Arts on Main”, then under construction, the message: Maboneng. “Arts on Main” meanwhile, along with galleries, offers known artists such as William Kentridge a studio and for several weeks has provided an off-space for Goethe Institute: GoetheonMain
Maboneng means “place of light” and is a quotation from Niq Mhlongo’s novel “Aftertears”. Mhlongo, who grew up in Soweto during the apartheid era, has made a name for himself with his descriptions of present-day life in the former ghetto. Thus Maboneng not only thematizes an aspiring district in Johannesburg that is to be given a shot in the arm by a colony of art, but is above all a reminder of those who for a very long time were prevented from standing tall in the light.
